Fluorescent Reflections

During assessment, I wanted to continue weaving in order to develop the ideas that I still had at the end of the Practice Unit. I had imagery that I felt I hadn't developed to the full potential and an idea of colour palette that I wanted to explore. I went back to my initial photographs from London and focused on the destinations on the sides of the buses again, but this time concentrating on the glow and variety of colours that make up these iconic, unmissable signs.

I wanted to continue using a plain warp in the style of Dash and Miller as well as every 3rd section having a double number of ends as I think this gave subtle variety to my samples. I used 3 colours from the Menswear colour matrix from my live project as weft colours and used merino wool in order to gain a soft, luxurious fabric. I dyed shades of fluorescent greens to mimic the blend of colours and lights from the bus signs and these formed the brocading on top of the warp which I think gives a glow across the cloth, with the depth of colour lifting the overall appearance of the samples.

Experimenting with patterning on Scotweave lead to me creating advanced point and diamond structures which I translated to my samples, however I think that these could be developed further in another warp. I feel these samples combine elements from both my major and live projects in the Practice Unit. I feel I have found an area and a style of weaving that suits me but pushes my ideas in new and exciting ways and I look forward to continuing this in Unit X.
